The Jungle Book was a major success, grossing over $73 million in the United States in its first release, and the same again from two re-releases
Robert and Richard Sherman enjoyed a 10-year association with Walt Disney, during which they composed more than 150 songs for films, TV shows and Disneyland.
Their most famous compositions include A Spoonful Of Sugar from Mary Poppins, Trust In Me and I Wanna Be Like You from The Jungle Book, and Truly Scrumptious and Me Ol’ Bamboo from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Their other Disney credits include the Winnie The Pooh series, The Parent Trap, Bedknobs And Broomsticks, The Sword In The Stone, The Aristocats and The Happiest Millionaire.
President George W. Bush awarded the duo the National Medal of Arts in 2008, commending them for music that ‘has helped bring joy to millions.’
In addition to being catchy and playful, most of the songs the Shermans wrote work on multiple levels – a tip they claimed to have received from Disney.
