The 31m long and 15m wide craft is able to capture nearly 103.4 kW of solar energy to power its engine which normally needs 20kW, to reach an average speed of 8 knots (15kph or 9mph). Although it is possible it can “swim” twice faster.
The 60 tonne catamaran costs 18 million euro ($24.4 million USD). The ship was created at the Knierim Yacht Club in Kiel, Northern Germany, and was launched successfully in March, 2010, after 14 months of building. To achieve to full photovoltaic capture there are solar covered flaps that are extended at the stern and amidships.
